How Much Is a Knee Injury Worth in California Workers’ Comp?

What a knee injury pays in California workers’ comp: engine-computed PD percentages and dollars across the realistic WPI range and three occupations, the rating strings behind them, and how apportionment to pre-existing arthritis cuts the number.

Knees are the workhorse injury of physical jobs — and the body part where the gap between “the diagnosis” and “the number” confuses people most. A meniscus tear isn’t worth anything by itself; the whole-person impairment the physician assigns is, after the schedule adjusts it for your job and age. This page computes that, across the whole realistic range, with every figure from the rating engine.

How knee injuries are measured

The AMA Guides rate knees (impairment number 17.05.04.00 for range of motion; diagnosis-based alternatives exist) from examination findings and surgical outcomes. As rough anchors: a partial meniscectomy with a good result commonly lands in the low single digits of WPI; ligament laxity and cartilage damage run higher; and arthroplasty — a knee replacement — reaches the mid-teens to high-20s depending on the result. The WPI is the physician’s call; everything after it is arithmetic.

The money table

Final PD and total indemnity, computed for three occupations at age 42–46, 2026 injury, maximum PD rate ($290/week), single impairment, before apportionment:

WPIClerical · 111Custodian · 340Carpenter · 380
4%5% · $4,3508% · $6,96010% · $8,772.50
8%10% · $8,772.5014% · $13,412.5017% · $17,545
12%15% · $14,64520% · $21,89524% · $27,695
16%19% · $20,44525% · $29,217.5031% · $40,020
20%25% · $29,217.5033% · $44,08038% · $54,230
25%32% · $42,05040% · $58,29046% · $70,470

The knee’s occupational variants run steep: jobs built on standing, climbing, and carrying (group 380) rate the same WPI several brackets above desk work — the schedule prices lost earning capacity, not anatomy. Every percentage maps to weeks and dollars on the PD money chart.

Same WPI, different jobs — the strings

12% WPI · group 111 · clerical
100% (17.05.04.00 - 12 - [1.4]17 - 111D - 14 - 15) = 15% PD · $14,645
12% WPI · group 380 · carpenter
100% (17.05.04.00 - 12 - [1.4]17 - 380I - 23 - 24) = 24% PD · $27,695

The variant letter (D vs. I) is the whole difference — $13,050 of it. Paste either string into the rating-string decoder to see every step verified against the schedule.

Apportionment: the arthritis discount

Degenerative changes in the knee are the classic §4663 non-industrial factor — imaging past 40 almost always shows some. The physician’s split applies at the end:

Carpenter · 16% WPI · 20% non-industrial
80% (17.05.04.00 - 16 - [1.4]22 - 380I - 29 - 31) = 25% PD · 100.75 weeks · $29,217.50

Unapportioned, the same knee rated 31% PD — $40,020. One sentence in the report removed $10,802.50. Whether that split is substantial evidence is where knee cases are fought; see how apportionment works.

What this table can’t tell you

A knee rarely travels alone — an altered gait pulls in the hip and back, and multiple parts combine on the CVC rather than add. Below-maximum wages scale the dollars down, and settlements price future medical (a future revision surgery is real money) beyond any table. FAQ

How much is a knee injury worth in California workers’ comp?
It depends on the whole-person impairment, occupation, and age. At the 2026 maximum PD rate a 4% WPI knee rates 5% PD ($4,350) for a clerical worker, while a 25% WPI knee — total-knee-replacement territory — rates 46% PD ($70,470) for a carpenter, before apportionment. The PD indemnity is exactly computable; this guide shows the table.
What is a torn meniscus worth in California?
A partial meniscectomy with a good result commonly rates a low single-digit WPI under the AMA Guides — engine-computed, 4% WPI is 5–10% PD ($4,350–$8,772.50 at the 2026 max) depending on occupation. Persistent instability, cartilage damage, or a poor surgical result rates higher; the WPI itself is the physician’s call.
How much PD is a total knee replacement?
The AMA Guides rate a good-result total knee replacement in the mid-teens to high-20s WPI. In our engine-computed table, 16–25% WPI runs 19% PD ($20,445, clerical) up to 46% PD ($70,470, carpenter) at the 2026 maximum rate, before apportionment.
Does pre-existing arthritis reduce a knee rating?
Usually, via Labor Code §4663 apportionment — degenerative changes in the knee are the classic non-industrial factor. In our computed example, an 80% industrial finding turns a 31% PD carpenter rating into 25% PD: $40,020 becomes $29,217.50.
